I hear you, Paul. And, yes, I do think philosophical ideas matter. And, no, I'm not a nihilist or end-of-world- person. To the contrary, I am positively expectant, hopeful and have faith for a better future for my children and grandchildren.

That's the only way to stay sane in the world you describe above. However, I think the radical views for which you refer represent a small minority of Americans on the fringes. And, yes, mental health must be addressed as a fundamental component of any gun reforms. Here are some of the smart and sensible reforms I support (list is not all inclusive):

1) Strong enforcement of current gun laws.

2) Closing legal loopholes, such as no background checks at gun shows.

3) Studying the relationship between mental health, age and gun violence.

4) Regulating industries which desensitize young people to gun violence.

5) Leveraging Big Data to improve background checks and gun tracking systems.

6) Enacting stronger deterrents and harsher penalties for those who violate gun laws--including juveniles.

7) Increasing citizen engagement through enhanced public education, outreach and awareness campaigns.

8) Fostering non-partisan partnerships to promote smart, sensible and safe gun reforms.
