Such a position by Biden might also have led to a direct attack on Israel by Iran and others in the region—which would have sucked us into a wider Middle East war anyway. At least the American policy of containment appears to be working to a large extent so far, even though Iran continues to direct attacks on American troops in Syria and Iraq, not to mention attempted drone strikes against American warships in the region.
The bottom line is that the Middle East has always been a tinderbox. But throwing Israel under the bus publicly is not the right approach in my view and would only worsen an already bad situation. Let’s see how it plays out over the longer term.
